Song #3: Behind the Scenes

Intimacy is nakedness. Letting someone in to see our true, unpolished selves takes trust and transparency. It's a beautiful thing indeed when in that vulnerability we find ourselves accepted, flaws and all.

"Behind the Scenes" was inspired by a conversation I had with a good friend. The first stanza is based on an analogy he mentioned in passing. I was inspired, took it from there and ran with it.

Make sure you let it play through the bridge [2:45]: that's where things really pick up!

LYRICS:

there is a stage and there is a curtain
outside's the show, but hey don't you know:
that behind the scenes things ain't what they seem
the cards are all shown, the tricks are exposed

we do our dance, we put the act on
out under bright lights, out on the stage
but all that's the show, there's something secret
behind the scenes, come back with me

when the lights go down
and the walls come down
and there is an ending to all the pretending
I'll let you in
come see my sin
where all is uncovered is where the true lovers live

let's take it off, take off the makeup
take off our clothes, 'til all is exposed
I'll show you mine, if you show me yours
back behind the scenes, where it's just you and me

when the lights go down
and the walls come down
and there is an ending to all the pretending
I'll let you in
come see my sin
where all is uncovered is where the true lovers live

a place of refuge where naught is forbidden
where trust is drunk freely and nothing is hidden
where you can be you without bullshit pretension
where baggage is welcome and girl did I mention
that behind the curtain there's no condescension
we'll reveal more than a stripper convention
and no matter what you still get my attention
I guess that's what love's all about

when the lights go down
and the walls come down
there is an ending to all the pretending
I'll let you in
come see my sin
where all is uncovered is where the true lovers live

Yep, another great song. I don't know how you're going to be able to keep up this quality. I really love the last line of the chorus "where all is uncovered is where the true lovers live." I'm a sucker for alliteration. The instrumentation works really well in this song too. I dig the 6/8 swing feel.

I say after the first 3 months you package these up in a CD.

I really enjoyed this, especially from 2:45 on. You write lyrics I love to quote. I agree with Jay, you should definitely put these on a CD!

"I'll show you mine if you show me yours...". Yeah, this song could be purely sensual, AND nakedness can also mean, 'I'll show you my hopes, fears, dreams, anger, disappointment, joy, etc.' all because there's no fear. "Where all is uncovered is where the true lovers live." Thanks for letting the music flow, man. You amaze me continually with your talent.

My favorite of the group so far, holmes. i also dig that swing feel. Great bridge, love the bells. And I'm a sucker for anything chromatic.. that little piano line before the 2nd chorus, love it.

Your friend, whomever he might be, is a genius. I mean he might also be crazy, but in time when that passes, he'll just be a genius.

So K.Kav got me hooked on this blog, a little late but just in time to follow a year in your life. This song reminds me of something I wrote about seven years ago at a particularly lonely part of my life (high school, ugh). But it seems like the precursor lyrics to this masterpiece. Its a little Dr. Seuss sounding, but you'll get the point:

I'm the greatest act you've ever seen
I'll fool you with my smile.
But instead of being happy,
I've been empty all the while...

I'll laugh and bow and curtsy,
And put a good show on for you,
You'll never guess how sad I am
Or scared, alone, or blue.

And you will never know
All this from my face.
For every cent you bet to me
I'm the greatest act you've ever seen.

Anyways, this song touched me. Thanks for sharing it.

I would love nothing better than for us to show each other- everything. I'm dreaming of you now... and you are so far, far away. (Sad)
